JPJ Tint rules in Malaysia
Kuala Lumpur, 20 October 2025 — Jabatan Pengangkutan Jalan Malaysia (JPJ) has reminded drivers to comply with the nation’s vehicle tinting laws, warning that non-compliance could result in fines of up to RM2,000 for a first offence.
The rules, first tightened in 2019 and still enforced in 2025, specify minimum Visible Light Transmission (VLT) levels for different parts of the car.
Current Legal Tint Limits:
- Front windscreen: At least 70% VLT must be maintained.
- Front side windows (driver and passenger): At least 50% VLT.
- Rear side windows and rear windscreen: No fixed VLT limit.
The purpose, JPJ explains, is to ensure clear visibility for safe driving and compliance with law enforcement standards.
Penalties for Breaking the JPJ Tint Rules
Motorists who exceed the darkness limits face strict punishment:
- First offence: Fine up to RM2,000 or six months’ imprisonment, or both.
- Repeat offences: Fine up to RM4,000 or up to 12 months’ imprisonment, or both.
JPJ data shows that since the regulation update, more than 100,000 notices have already been issued nationwide for illegal tint usage.
Exemptions and Special Approvals
Car owners who require darker tints on front glass for medical or security reasons may apply for special approval from JPJ. These exemptions are reviewed on a case-by-case basis, with supporting documentation required. Approval is not automatic, and payment of processing fees may apply.
What Drivers Should Do
JPJ advises vehicle owners to:
- Check the actual VLT percentage of both factory glass and aftermarket films before installation.
- Use certified tint installers equipped with VLT meters.
- Keep receipts and product specifications in case of roadblocks or inspection.
- Apply for exemption only if darker tints are necessary for medical or safety reasons.
While darker glass may seem attractive for comfort and privacy, JPJ stresses that front visibility is critical for road safety. Drivers are free to use darker films on rear windows, but must comply with the 70% and 50% VLT limits for the front areas.
Failure to follow the rules will not only result in fines and legal trouble but may also endanger the safety of drivers, passengers, and other road users. Stop guessing about tint. Talk to the team that installs it right the first time. Enquire now with Hamel Film!
